A Three-Tier
Path to Leadership

YES programs are structured as a progressive ladder — youth move through each tier as they grow, gaining new experiences, confidence, and leadership skills from elementary school through high school graduation.

1
Gain New Experiences
Try Something New

Introductory experiences that open doors to the outdoors. Youth try activities they would never otherwise access — no experience required.

2
Build Confidence
Grow Through Repetition

Seasonal programs build real skill and real confidence through repeated practice with consistent coaches and peers. Youth learn to push through challenges.

3
Create Pathways to Leadership
Lead and Mentor

57 Years of Getting
Boston Kids Outside.

1968
YES is born. Inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Richard Williams founds the Youth Activities Commission with a simple premise: Give Youth a Chance. Brings skiing to Boston youth.
1970
Operation Ski Lift launches (now Operation SnowSports), serving 500 youth from low-income families in its very first year.
1972
YES is incorporated as a 501(c)3 nonprofit. By the early 1970s, 1,000 youth are learning to ski with YES every winter.
1975
YES expands to summer outdoor activities — backpacking, canoeing, bicycling, and environmental education at Cape Cod National Seashore and Swann Lodge.
1985
YES purchases and renovates its headquarters at 412 Massachusetts Ave with a ski and bike rental shop storing 1,200 sets of equipment. Community fundraises $500,000 for the project.
1993
25th Anniversary. 50,000 youth have been served by YES. Hundreds of caring volunteers form the backbone of the organization.
1997
Harvard Business School study confirms YES is highly cost-effective with a significant measurable positive impact on the lives of urban youth.
2004
The Richard Williams Memorial Scholarship is established — annually awarded to college-bound YES teens who embody Richard's values of leadership and community.
2007
YES Academy is established to support Boston middle and high school students through leadership development programming.
